Farah Khan

She was on Zee's Ikke pe Ikka recently 'interviewed' by her brother Sajid Khan . She won the award for Chaiya chaiya -Dil Se on Zee cine awards..

FARAH KHAN
FIGHTER FOREVER
I first give you the young, full of life, ever-brimming with confidence and just a girl like any other girl, Farah Khan, a choreographer who in just six years has taken the field of choreography by storm. Her passion, perseverance and endless striving for perfection have already earned her a place of honour. Choreography was basically a field dominated by fat (all of them were fat, except for one Madhav Kishan, the brother of the late Kathak exponent Gopi Kishan) old men who used to treat stars like animals and dancers like some baser form of animals. I know of some choreographers who used the stick and the most foul language to get work out of stars who found dancing to be a very daunting task (not all great artistes are good dancers). And there were women who started off as assistants to these choreographers. Some of them stayed on as their asssitants till their bodies and limbs just couldn't move and the lucky ones, only the very lucky ones rose to become choreographers. They were successful too but in everything they did (down to the stick and the foul language they followed their "Masterji" whose feet they touched in public and cursed them to their heart's content when the "Masterji" turned his fat back for all the humilation he had heaped on them when they were his "girls" (the male dancers are called "boys" and the female, "girls" still).

Some of Farah’s daring quotes which makes me mark her out as the woman of the millennium to come: “I’m the best, people know it, my work proves it. I am the highest paid choreographer in the Hindi film industry. More and more women are coming to films because there is respect, especially if you are good in your work, no one looks down on you and you are paid very well. It doesn’t depend on whether you are a man or a woman or even a eunuch. This is the only industry where only your work matters.

If your work is good and you do your work sincerely, without any malice or motives or only with the greed to make money no one can stop you. That’s my experience and I think things will only improve with lots of women from good backgrounds, good education and good manners coming in. Mark my words, this industry will be a great industry by the time I complete my film.” And Farah is proud that she has done all that she has done in what is still called a man’s world.-full article on http://www.screenindia.com/cover.htm

Hu TU Tu

Anybody like me who believes Bollywood cant make a boring movie should see this one . Well I did and I am not impressed .

Normally it takes 20 mins for the films to introduced the main characters and then there is a sudden burst of a song and dance with hundreds of extras and the movie takes off. Here one waits the full hour , then another and only in the last 15 mins does something happen . It should carry a label of an art movie and not a Bollywood one . For one there are no multi million dollar dresses .

Gulzar's dialog is supposed to be very good - well give me Kader Khan anyday .Whats the point of watching a movie where nobody says anything surprising , no woman tries to humiliate a man by twisting the knife ( see Mehndi for example where the poor husband keeps lamenting -'why does every arguement always go round and round till I end up the one being blamed !) ? - there is not a single line of Urdu shairi ? . Some people are cruel and will say its their own fault that people are born in poor families and OK they have to fight injustice but at least show it clearly ! 'Basti jala di ( the village was set on fire ) -said as a matter of fact but nothing is shown and yet Nana Patekar sings stirring songs against oppression (his acting as the usual manic revolutionary is very good) . Terrible loose ends . Why do the leaders of the poor kill the servant girl 'to send a message' ? Monica Bedi or Archnanpuran Singh as the evil politician would have made the movie more interesting . They can be mean with a mischievous smile .

The two songs of Tabu have been spoilt by having Lata do them . It really is time she started a singing school and retired from singing for young girls . The voice does not match - and there is Kavita and Alkna and others to do that.

A few rare good points - a plane buzzing traffic on the 'highway ' - country roads in the West are far better - village life of the poor - how to get through metal detector gates - booth capturing - the huge cutouts at election rallies blowing up politicians Rajiv Gandhi style . Only go to see it if your purpose in going to movie theatres is other than seeing the film..There are also no comedy skits in this movie . Only a slight relief from Tabu brought up as a tomcat using swear words - Harmazada , Bhen.... , creating consentration in the men !..

Apparently this movie is doing well in Mumbai . It has quite a bit of Marathi dialog , and that is good if Bollywood introduces more regional languages as long as a translation is provided right away .

There is a scene where Tabu determines to teach a lesson to the Police Karate teacher who has just molested another cadet . Now that could have been shown as a great fight for five minutes but is wasted by her kneeing him in the goolies right away . Maybe the scenes were cut . When the terrorist leader asks her what she wants on her last night before they execute her the next day , she says will you make love to me ? ! When he refuses she says OK , let me have a bath , I havent had one for many days..Mo

I guess the world is made up of very different persons with very different tastes. After a long long time, here was a hindi film I saw in just one go and really loved it. It had its defects but was a real film.

On the other hand, I have been trying to finish seeing BMCM for more than three months. Inspite of the Kader Khan dialogues, the great AB, lavish dances and all, I find it difficult to watch it for more than 15 minutes.. it seems so stupid and the comedy is terrible and so I go on, like a bitter medicine, forcing myself to take it in small doses just because I did spend money on buying the film and I don't want to throw it away!.. Deepsun

Are you joking or you just don't have the taste to appreciate anything other than Kader Khan dialogues and lavish dance sequences. I am really confused.

I for one thought that the movie was very good. For a change I liked the part of Nana patekar. Tabu was excellent as a rebel as well as loving daughter. The end doesn't give you all the answer but then that is not a pre-requisite for a great movie. Watch this movie if you like Gulzar's style. It reminded me of another Gulzar movie Maachis, which was on similar lines..Shaz

What are you on about? This is one of the greatest movie's of the year! It is very very slow, but thats the Gulzar style...it is really touching and shows politics and politicians of india. A great movie.. Alok
DAAG

I've just seen DAAG, it is definetly one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Mahima is superb in her double role as Kajal and Kajri, which she is bound to get award nominations for. Chandarchur is also excellent as Mahima's husband, and last but not least Sanjay Dutt in a negative role, is just awesome, the movie will definetly help to get back to the top.

You have to listen the song lucky kabootar, it is a wicked punjabi song and sanjay is terrific in the song. All in all definetely a must see movie. Daag - The Fire is bout to set the box office alight..miaslam.

A movie which starts of promisingly, peters into a routine cliche ridden tale in the middle and then picks up tempo at the climax to give a fairly intresting end. The best part of the movie is the acting by the lead pair - chandrachurS and Mahima(in a double role). Chandrachur enacts his wildy fluctuating role of a slick lawyer without any fuss or overacting, lending the (incredible)character some amount of credibility.

Here is one promising actor, who can really act. Mahima is equally good in both her roles ; as a confused and loving wife and then as a nautch girl (a type of dual role which we have seen umpteen number of times before)who doubles up as the deceased wife. Yes, SanjayDutt is there. San his long tresses, which has given way to a lean and trim cut. Looks as fit as ever. But, his role is hardly worth a mention. As the venegance seeking son of a dead father, all he has to do is to run around with a gun, occasionally breaking into a song and dance. He is supposed to be a Commando in the movie, but he plans his killing with such naivette that you are left wondering, whether the scriptwriters were sozzled while writing his character. Fortunately, there is no female lead for him; otherwise, we would have the unengaging prospect of seeing a few more inspid songs. Also, why are many of the directors so obsessed with having movies which extend over 18 reels? The same story could have been completed in 15 reels, saving us (the audience) much of headache or catching a quick siesta in the theatre. It could have left a much better impression.

Now, to the story. Chandrachur plays a slick lawyer (both words go together, according to popular opinion of lawyers), who is ruthless and evil in the court, but loving and caring to his wife. So far so good. We expect, oh! here is something different. Let's see what happens next.. What happens is along predictable lines. A Strict municipal commisoner is wrongly indicted of bribery by the lawyer and is bumped off in the prison. Cut to a routine introduction scene of the Son (Sanjaydutt) in a hostage rescue mission and in the next reel rushing back to avenge the death of his father. He tries to gun down the lawyer, but his wife is killed and the lawyer becomes comatose. Lawyer's cronies get a wifelookalike who ofcourse does the regular naachgana, which brings the lawyer back to his senses. But, thanks to a Scientific miracle (which only the director is aware off) - SlimyChandra wakes up with a "BilKul Saphed aur Accha" Damhak .. or something of that sort. that's what the "doctor" (played by a totally illsuited ShaktiKapoor, who would have been better off playing a rapist or compounder) in the movie says.

So, our HydeturnedJekyll comes back and sees the damage he has done in his earlier avtaar. How he sets about repairing the bad work, how the "commando" tries to come to terms with the new miracle, how the fakewife comes to take the place of the original etc etc.. form the rest of the plot which takes a long time to complete. Throw in a few songs here and there and what you have is Daag.. May be, if the director had displayed some courage to get off from the routine track and cut off all the cliches from the plot, we would have seen a very engaging movie. But, what we get is something, which can at the best be called watchable. Ofcourse, that's a huge compliment, considering the amount of trash we have releasing week after week.

Music wise, a couple of numbers are catchy. The Background score is a straight and embrassing lift from Titanic . Technical credits are average. So is the movie. cheers.. raj

Ah Ab Laut Chalen

I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. Except the ending, I found the storyline to be quite good: rarely have they made movies about Indians in the USA. The acting and dialogue was above average. I think Akshaye Khanna is someone to look out for ( I really enjoyed his performance in BORDER), his performance as the immigrant with success in his eyes was quite good. In an era where most Indian actors tend to overact, it was refreshing to see a quiet, reserved perfomance by Akshaye.

Aishwarya Rai looked quite good, and even acted decently. Of course I enjoyed the perfomrances by Jaspal Bhatti and Kader Khan, who played a Sardarji and Pathan, respectively. The chemistry between them was great. They witty exchanges they had were so funny. They were like the South Asian version of THE ODD COUPLE. I think those two could do a successful movie together.

I didn't recognize Alok Nath as the grandfather or Moushumi Chatterjee as his mother. It was nice to see them in the movie. I also like the performance of Loveleen, played wonderfully by Suman Ranganthan, as a vamp who has her eyes set on Akshaye. I was surprised to see Rajesh Khanna make an appearance as Akshaye's long lost father. I thought he was an MP from Delhi, or something.

Though it was nice to see this fine actor make an appearance, I thought it was detrimental to the ending of the movie. The movie motors on nicely till the end, when the movie tries to reconcile the relationship between father, son, mother, and grandfather in a matter of 10-15 minutes. It was bascially trying to do too much with so little time. I thought the ending was way too corny. But this detracts very little from the movie, in my opinion. It was still a joy to watch. Soon as I get a DVD player, i will purchase the DVD.

p.s. i think this movie was much better than DTPH, which I watched the same day. Just saw this movie yesterday and really liked it. After a long time, a good clean movie with a fresh theme. I must say Rishi kapoor has directed this movie well and has done a good job in capturing the human emotions.

After numerous movies recently stressing technical values at the cost of giving a human angle to it(like Dil Se--a pathetic second half) and all the hype and hoopla surrounding it and praising these technical directors more than they deserve, here is a simple movie displaying simple human emotions without wallpapering it with unnecessary technicalities. It was also good to see Rajesh Khanna after a long time and he still can emote superbly.

This movie is doing well in India and it really deserves its success. I recommend watching it... Shridhar

A movie in widescreen :) . Akshay Khanna is a young graduate who cant get a job in India and decides to come to New York . Works illegaly as a taxi cab driver until one day absent mindedly he drives on the wrong side of the road , then as a fast food chef , petrol pump attendant etc. managing to get fired from most jobs .

Aishwarya Rai - a real life Miss World and looking very beautiful is his girl friend but he is determined to marry an American citizen to get the green card. Jaspal Bhatti and Kader Khan in excellent comedy perfomances are the squabbling Sardar and Pathan taxi drivers with hearts of gold.

The first song 'Does this still happen in India ? is very very good. There is a bit of Bhangra but also it is nice to see a Pathan type dance as well . And there is a very good Gujarati dandia dance. Again the two or three songs do tell a story as the two girls fight it out over Akshay . The first half of the movie as is true of almost all Bollywood movies is great as the story unfolds . The second half where they have to bring all the threads together does drag in parts but it is livened up by the comedy breaks . One funny bit is where this Indian couple work hard and save for 10 years and then they accidently give a Pan as a gift to an American cop and of course he breaks a tooth on the nut and they have to pay all their savings $200,000 in damages and in disgust decide to go back to India ! That mugger on roller skates might have been a bad idea , its sure to be copied in India

Do NRIs really bring parents over , confiscate their passports and make them work as unpaid servants ? One day Bollywood will make a movie where the NRIs are all good and the Indians in India all bad and I predict that it will be a surprise hit !

The comedy bits are very good - Paresh Rawal as an American cop is also good , the sad emotional bits are a trifle inappropriate but no movie is perfect and I know people who have seen this one two or three times ..

Hum apke dil mein rehte hain

'I live in your heart ' is 99s first Punjabi movie -from the amount of Punjabi spoken ! , and its actually quite good .

Anil Kapoor is a rich man's son , returned after a long stay in America who has to give in to his father's blackmail -a diabetic who threatens to kill himself by eating sweets to excess if Anil doesnt get married. Usually in Bollywood movies somebody is threatening to kill themselves with a knife but here Anil's father is reaching out for the box of 'mithai; while others are trying to restrain them . Even the kids thought it was funny.

Anil insists that he will do it on one condition -that it be a one year contract and if he hasnt fall in love with his wife by then , she will have to go. The first half is excellent and full of superb digs at NRIs - how they can be so politically correct and into women's lib and still manage to upset everyone inadvertently . Of course despite Kajol's best efforts he dumps her - but in a most pleasant American manner -saying they will be the best of friends.

The second half is Kajol's revenge and the last twenty minutes could be cut. ] Anil's outfits are very good , almost overshadowing Kajol's and the highlight of the first half is the sexy dance by Mink . The comedy bits about two people trying to get their money back from debtors is quite funny . As with all Bollywood movies there is always a strong moral message ..

Mehndi

Loved this movie ! I just dont know how Bollywood manages to come up with one masterpiece after another !
Absoultely superb dialog by Salim . Evey line is a gem . Cant remember much of it as it was so rich eg 'Hum thik waqt ka intazaar nahin karte , hum us wakt ko le ate hain - I dont wait for the right time , I make it come to me.'

No sane woman would put with these kind of atrocities by her husband and in laws but then it is a movie and makes for a great story.
It is a great to know that Bollywood has not become completely westernized with the kids wearing the latest designer jeans as in KKHH or DPTH and with the Western art decor which is winning all the awards , but still can make these traditional back to the Indian roots kind of movies .
The setting is a rich village and the Mujhras (erotic dances by the women) -and the one in this movie is exceptionally beautiful - with the Mughal court costumes . One comic song and dance - a mixture of all the well known recent hits is sheer brilliance.
A funny incident is one is with the comedian whose wife brings her seven younger brothers and sisters with her who sleep with her every night , so he cant get alone with his wife for a couple of weeks and finds that she cant .
Normally in a Bollywood movie everybody repents in the end , and its good that this one is so different . This really is a must see movie , and it is exactly the kind I had in mind for the NRI second chance theatre. Of course it will be a sell out on DVD , but if you get a chance see it on the big screen , sit back and prepare to be thoroughly mesmerized for three hours..Mo
