Hindustan ki Kasam

Really enjoyed this movie . Am putting it in newsgroups separately as there are bound to be lots of mean nasty political comments.

For the next year or so while the Indians take advantage of the conflict and make patriotic theme movies Pakistanis are going to feel like the Germans when they watch Hollywood war movies but instead of objecting to these movies the answer is of course to make their own putting their point of view forward but there is no point in making 'wholesome ' movies as it is sex and innuendos which sell and so censoship laws would have to be relaxed .

Sometimes one wonders if movie makers are so innocent ! . There is one fat character -Muslim - who keeps falling off motorcycles but they make him excessively fond of drink too and its sure to invite fatwas and like Border make this movie a blockbuster. Two Pakistanis had wandered into the cinema and all through the first half one kept telling the other loudly 'I told you we should have gone to see another movie !' but they seemed to have settled down by the interval.

Pakistani Punjabis will really enjoy the two Punjabi/Hindi songs - Tera Jalwa and the Dhaba/Punjabi bar song and the bridal suite song with the bride dressed in the red dress unique only in the subcontinent . And the Pakistani female agent -wow , all red blooded males are going to lust after her ! Extremely sexy doing her excercises in leotards and then jumping on her man . Probably the first movie to show women as sexual agressors .

Indians are not happy with the name 'Bharat' for India as it has male conotations and like to think of India as female and so in the excellent Jalwa song India is shown as a beautiful woman and the song praises all her attribiutes . There is new Goddess evoving in Hindu mythology - Goddess India .

The Punjabi bar song is very good too and its interesting to see the female dancer with currency notes near her bra.

Why is South Asian dress so much more appealing to the eye? Have a look at the dance by Sen and the girls in western dance and then a similar dance by Manisha with the girls in Indian dress similar to that shown on temple scultpures 1000 years ago . There is really no comparison . What one would like to know from those who are fashion savvy is why does the Indian dress appeal so much more .

Dialog is excellent - and the verbal repartee is as always a joy . When Tauheed says to Manisha -who is jumping all over him 'Woman control your passions ' She replies 'what passion is the passion which can be controlled ?' 'woh deewangee hi kya deewangee jis pe kabu ho?'

I gave up seeing Bollywood movies when they went off the big screen and the video copies were so awful but with the return to the big screen and crystal clear DVD , the awesome screen prescence that Amitabh has becomes apparent . He is superb in this movie -also see 'Muqaddar ka Skindar ' on DVD with subtitles .

Two white girls came in just after the interval and stayed for the rest of the movie . They were on their own and may have come early for the following movie but they seemed quite comfotable and my impression was that they had come for this movie . Maybe they enjoy the songs and dances and fashion shows and subtitles would make these movies more popular .

Does anybody want to know the story ? Its about twins who get separated at age 3 -one is taken to Pakistan and raised to hate India , infiltrates and becomes a guerilla busy killing Indian Generals . The other stays in India becomes a writer and because of the communication twins have , gets dreams of these killings before they are done and writes best sellers.

Of course the Indian authorities unaware of the bad twin arent pleased when his thrillers turn out to be true and give him the third degree .Action sequences eg twins fighting are excellent . Both faces are shown and one Ajay delievering a flying karate kick to another is a sight to behold . Dont know how they do the tricks but its good .

Renegade Pakistani generals decide to assasinate Nawaz Sharif who is going to India in a small plane to save money and maybe it doesnt match Air Force one action but its still very good .

If I get a chance will get the DVD or see the movie again . Its very good .A little puzzled about how they managed to be so current . They mention V's trip to Pakistan which happened only three months ago . Normally the movies take at least two years to make and then have post production editing and dubbing which takes at least three months .

Another interesting bit is where the army interrogators hypnotise Ajay to get at the dreams he is having . They dont show the whole induction sequences as Indians would start practising on each other but what is shown is quite good .

Also people falling off planes . The shot is from the door of the plane and quite fun to watch the figure vanish into the distance .

A lot of necessary ultra violence which kept the 4 year olds goggle eyed . Of course if you tell them its all ketchup they quite enjoy it . For some reason violence in Bollywood movies does not seem as menacing as in Hollywood ones - I am not quite sure why.

The movie has been running house full , even the morning shows so it seems like its going to be a very big hit . How do people know whether a movie is going to be good - is it because of the music they have heard ?

Some movies which I thought were very good indeed like Anari No. 1 -and naysayers like Viv and Harish should try and write a comedy script to see how difficult it is - had very few people .

Funnily enough there isnt a single anti Pakistani comment in the whole movie ! In fact the two renegade Pakistani Generals get away with making a lot of anti Indian propaganda .

Are Russians offended by Air Force One where the President is a peace maker - the Nawaz Sharif lookalike in this movie is qiute good and NS might have played himself if he had been offered the role - and a couple of Generals bad guys ? Until we get reviews from Pakistanis we wont know if they were offended . These movies are made privately for the livelihood of million or so Indians and they had to take advantage of an oppurtunity like this and so are not really propaganda in that sense .

Tauheed the Pakistani agent is very good and I quite liked the way he solves the puzzle of tackling the heavy truck trailer which has bullet proof windows and he is in an armed helicopter sent out to destroy it . I thought the special effects were very good . Jumping off a plane and landing on top of the roof of another one etc.

One wonders how much the "masses" actually care about the conflict. It is quite "close to home" I suppose. As for the heightened emotions, they will surely continue for a while yet, at least until after the forthcoming elections. I suggest we simply relax and enjoy the film for what it is: A snapshot of India in mid-1999. It seems that all the usual Bollywood ingredients are there. Pakistani viewers shouldn't take too much offence, I feel. This is the way things are in India right now. We live in hope that sanity will prevail. Enjoy what is, after all, just a movie.. Richard Turner

Hum dil de chuke sanam

An extraordinarily good movie . The first half is great , the second half even better !

All about the fickleness of women . Professing undying love and then marrying somebody else 5 minutes later when the back is turned . And then she tells her husband he can have her body but her heart belongs to someone else !. His father advises him that as a 'Rajput ( warrior) its his duty to take control of his wife , but being a modern husband he goes all over Italy to try and find her boyfriend and reunite the two .

We know its Italy because the men gesture so wildly with their hands when talking . Its of course Budapest -and there are some superb aerial shots to show this magnificient city in its true splendour - but Indians know only three western countries -America , England and Italy where Sonia Gandhi comes from , so maybe one can forgive the makers .

Great dialog , because the movie is quite long cant remember all of it but one example - 'God gives us pain so that we recognise love or happiness when it comes along'- maybe doesnt translate too well -but long may Bollywood come up with such lines which make one think .

Forget DVD, this is one movie that must be seen on the biggest possible screen . I want to live in the kind of house that Aish lives in , in Gujarat Since labor is cheap in India every column of a stone staircase is exquistely carved . Every frame is filled with glorious vivid color -of dresses , South Asian furniture, temple ruins , even the desert looks lovely . And the music by Ismail Darbar !! - mixture of classical , Gujarati and a bit of Hindi with Gujarati and Kutchi folk dances . When Bollywood decides to show us a different culture it really does it in style .

The second half in Hungary is also a delight for the eyes and there was lovely Western orchestral vocal music at the start of that half which one could have listened to for a much longer time . Salman Khan is superb and Ajay Devgan is also good although maybe his role is easier . Aisharwaya Rai - a real life Miss World has performed superbly . Maybe its her blue -green eyes that may be a problem at times. Karishma didnt have a hit till she wore brown contacts .

Even though the movie has been running for some time it was a full house and the manager who is a friend of mine told me that he had to turn away a 100 that night . Its the fault of the silly distributors . When a movie is this popular they should have three daily shows but they wont allow it . Dont even think of missing it ..

Sooryavansham

What makes this movie a treat are the background scenes . One song has the most exquistely beautiful waterfall you will ever see . Another has 100 elephants bathing in huge water hole . When I have earned enough money from my crimes I am going to build a haveli like the villain's - green terraced stories and magnificient traditional South Asian furniture .

Anu malik's music is great and the whole movie has an exotic South Indian touch with the temples from there and most of the outdoor scenes I think filmed in Nilgiri Hills .

I am not sure double roles are a good idea - not father and son anyway , and a man in ICU groggy cant suddenly get up and beat ten men ,but in Bollywood movies it helps to suspend disbelief and if you can do that you can really enjoy the movies .

Some great comedy sequences by Kader Khan and Anupam Kher . Well worth a dekho The best way to get rich quick in India is to start a bus service . One funny episode in this movie where a company hires a very sexy buxom bus conductress in low cut ,miniskirts who is always falling into the laps of the male passengers when ever the brake is applied . Even blind men clamour to travel on the bus at double the rate..Mo

in fact i saw one elephant trying to mate. observe the bottom left hand corner of the screen. rofl :)..Badshah
''it helps to suspend disbelief and if you can do that you can really enjoy the movies .''

Funny you should mention that ;-) I watched this last weekend with several reviews in my hands to help me out. I've seen some lengthy and brutal "final fight sequences", but I was taken aback by this one My suspension of disbelief went right out the window. When I returned the tape to the market and was asked how I enjoyed the film, I blurted out "How the heck can this older guy, dying in the hospital -- or at least severely ill/wounded -- get up and start trashing all those other men?!?!?!"

The answer came without hesitation: "It's an Indian film!" 10 minutes later, someone came into the market and wanted to rent the film. The store owner said that I had just watched it, and he retold our conversation, ending with "How the heck ... " and the customer, without hesitation said: "It's an Indian film!"

OK, that was my lesson du jour. :-) ''Some great comedy sequences by Kader Khan and Anupam Kher .'' I don't know most of what they were talking about, but I sure was laughing up a storm ... what a team!

BTW, that was my first Amitabh film ;-) and I'm definitely going to see s'more..Jeanne

Mann

Mann - Amir Khan , Manisha Koirala

The first hour of this movie is very good -fast paced comedy and I love the lines the Casanova uses - 'this ship is fast , time is even faster , lets not waste the next three hours !' on a first meeting ! Half the time one would gets once face slapped but the other half. Another good line is 'dont let the dupatta slip from your shoulders , seeing your bare shoulders even the old men will pray for their youth to come back'.

The next half hour is a bit weepy , 'rona dhona' and its best to go out for a stroll but the second half is very good. The house on the island where the dadi lives is very beautifuly decorated . There is one song in a Chinese Buddhist temple with some pictures of the ruins of a temple in Indonesia ? Bhadrapur mixed in which are a delight to look at .

A friend told me its a mixture of A friend to remember and Titanic . Its good to acknowedge these in the credits like they did for Chachi 420(remake of Mrs Doubtfire) . Funnily enough they dont mention the playback singers .

The way children blurt out truths is also quite comic . 'My father says I love you many times , He must love your mum very much . No , he says that to the auntie who lives next door .'

The dialog as always in Bollywood movies makes you think . The actor who played Chiku in Daud has done a great comedy role here . Just watch him get carted off to the mental hospital .

It should be edited by about 20mins and would then make a very good movie to watch.Rani's dance in a black microskirt at the start of the movie- the dress looks very ordinary . Now if it had been Indianized with say silver beads across the border it would have looked great.

The manic laughter of one rejected suitor on the ship -Manisha calls him a 'multicolored monkey ' looking at his outfit -which goes on for five minutes wheh he finds Manisha has been dumped in turn, is quite funny.. Mo

This film is almost completely unfunny apart from the five-minute rant of the actor who plays Amir Khan's best friend and gets carted off to a mental hospital as a result. I find it incredible that anybody could consider it funny when most of the supposed comedy scenes involve cruel and offensive carricatures of people, especially people who do not look like film stars. The overriding message of this film (if a message is possible in a film as crass as this) is that: unless you have the looks of a film star you are only worthy of mocking.

If you think this is entertainment, Mo, then you have clearly disproved the current films-do-not-affect-viewers thinking. You are, it seems to me, far too complacent in your acceptance of a minimum quality threshold for Indian films.

In general, the few points in the film's favour (reasonable competence in the technical departments, a few catchy tunes and lead performances) do not compensate for the hackneyed and cliche-ridden 'plot', character inconsistencies that are so extreme that they dislodge any sense of continuity and, worst, the offensive and cruel nature of the 'comedy'. Also, I feel special mention must be made of the extremely annoying background music which constantly accentuates the obvious EVERY time there is some drama or sentimentality on-screen.

In short, not a very good film at all with hardly any entertainment value, unless you are VERY easily entertained. Avoid.

Regards..Mashuk

We musnt carry political correctness too far . The man with the squint and the other with too many teeth were trying to grope and molest and propose to Manisha at every oppurtunity and she said some cruel things which were quite funny and of course they got on their own back when they make fun of her when she is dumped . First time in Bollywood movies I think that they havent shown any sympathy for a rejected suitor and it is quite funny..Mo
Sirf Tum

A must see movie for those planning to visit the beautiful state of Kerala . One song is just magical -5 elephants with gold headdresses ,kathakali dancers , the canals and waterfalls , perfect . .

Bollywood movies must not be scared to present an extended introduction to different folk cultures , for example here they could have had a 15min Kathakali dance with explanations in Hindi.

This is a story of two people who fall intensely in love just writing to each other and then Salman Khan comes in between when they meet ! Priya Gill ( sounds like a Sikh name but I dont think she is one) has acted very well indeed . She was interviewed by Mayur on Zee and normally Mayur shows off by speaking in Hindi while the Bollywood stars cant speak any and just try to get along in English but Priya is different and she can string quite a few sentences of Hindi together and Mayur had to admit defeat and resort to English after a while . Its good to see stars who are fluent in languages other than just English .

A goree friend of mine was complaining that when they dress the women in western clothes in Bollywood movies they give them such trashy outfits . Well Sushmita does wear some classy western outfits but I think Priya in her saree with a red border outclasses them all .

Everyone has favourite bits they love about these movies - mine is the always fabulous Urdu dialog . Two examples , when the auto rickshaw driver -Jackie Shroff - refuses to take the fare , Sanjay says to him -'agar ghoda gaas say dosti kar lega to khayega kya ?' If a horse makes friends with grass what will he eat ? ie dont expect a worker or professional to survive without his fees .

Another example was the lonely rich girl living alone in a huge house who when the man asks how do you manage to live alone here says 'When I want to talk to someone , I look in the mirror , I tell jokes to myself , and when I cry I wipe my own tears away ' -beautiful ! Its good for actresses who have moved from modelling to cinema to take some acting classes . Its not easy to learn how to shed tears and be believable.

One excellent dream song is 'dilruba' filmed I think in Houston-the waterall in the city centre has never looked so good .

Dont go late in this movie or you will miss Gurdass Mann's on screen with his excellent Punjabi song with Deepshika in it -half the people had come to see the movie just for that .Some of the funniest moments in this movie are when Priya swears moving her lips but without making a sound at a man who she thinks has been following her around . Luckily f.. words are not allowed in Hindi movies -the only time the censor left it in was Pooja Batra using it in Virasat when she finds her fiance Anil has got married while she was away for a week , so its fun trying to make out what Priya might be saying .

When Priya's friend asks her why is she always so cruel to this man , she says she feels strangely attracted to him and so does it because she doesnt want to lose her control . A line lifted straight from millions of Mills and Boon I quite like the fantasy element in Bolly movies - stuff like $150 a month school teachers living in sprawling mansions in Bombay or Delhi as it gives a good excuse to showcase the latest fashion and design elements of Indian culture but occasionaly a movie like this with a dose of realism is good too .

A female graduate living in Nanital with her sister and brother who gets rejection after rejection for job intervies and has to come to Delhi to live in a 'working women's hostels'. Outside shared bathrooms with dodgy locks , small cramped one roomed flat of the hero.

Biwi No. 1

Salman Khan is one of those husbands who praises his wife even after marriage . Until he meets a model .Havent seen a comedy this good for ages . David Dhawan is a genius.

There is more Punjabi than Hindi in this movie , relfecting the clout of the NRI and NRP Punjabis who probably outnumber all other groups put together . One thing peculiar to Punjabi culture is the way the father talks to the son , using phrases where he is insulting himself ! 'Oolo de pathe , khote de puttar ! -son of an owl , son of a donkey ! - and you will hear a lot of that in this movie . Anil Kapoor and Tabu in fact almost steal the show as the oddball Punjabi couple .

Its I think the only movie made where the good guys play mean tricks on the bad ones . Salman Khan's solo crying sequence is acting at its very best . There is also a dog who eats with the family at the table .

Dont miss this one . It will have you in stitches for three hours . Songs , dances , costumes , locales -all superb , all a must see on the big screen . Top class entertainment , its going to be a mega mega hit ..Mo

See it only if you are a David Dhawan fan.

Otherwise the movie offers nothing new. The music is loud and unpleasant . Jungle hai is the only listenable song. Salmaan Khan doesnt come anywhere near Govinda in comic scenes. The loud noises he makes in many of the scenes are in fact irritating. Some fans however may find that cute.

Bottom line is : this is not a movie I would recommend to my freinds. Watch at your own risk! -Ashish

Worth seeing on big screen. Fantastic comedy!
You will enjoy it....in case not ...ask me for your money back! ..A Cassam
