Hum Sath Sath Hain

Forget the film's popularity. Overlook its "family values" messages. Hum Saath-Saath Hain is the ugliest movie I have ever seen. Did you notice the hideous blue "paintings" and the meters of artifical books adorning the walls of this family's house? The fact that every single surface was covered in nick-nacks and doo-dads which served no dramatic purpose?

Okay, then, how about the wallpaper that blended tones of turquoise, black and sunshine yellow effectively juxtaposed with mustard-hued artifical columns distributed willy-nilly throughout the set?

No? Well maybe you noticed that each actress, regardless of age, had the freakiest lipstick (except Sonali) -- Karisma had on this awful pink frost that must have come from the 99-cent bin at Rite-Aid; one older lady had fuschia lipstick set off by an orange sari and bright red dot.

Did you notice your eyeballs start to swell alarmingly during certain scenes? The guys looked okay except when is somebody gonna tell these Bollywood costume designers that Hello? Dudes don't wear a sweatshirt with DKNY on it. That goes for you, too, Shah Rukh. Hum Saath-Saath Hain was an aesthetic NIGHTMARE. I know this. I lived in India and I am intimately familiar with the modern Indian aesthetic

. And yes, I'll plead guilty as charged to carrying Western preconceptions into the new Naz 8 Multiplex. But nowhere on this earth will ANYBODY tell you it's okay to put fuschia lipstick with an orange sari and a red bindi. ;) .. Lisa Tsering

A syrupy offering and I am ashamed to say I lapped up every minute of it , well the first 2 hours anyway which I thought was extraordinarily good . The second with its obligatory semi sad bit was a bit tedious but if the whole movie was fun filled like Govinda's are , the arty would mark them down as lightweight .

Beautiful costumes and even more beautiful women - surfeit of them in fact - Tabu , Sonali , Neelam , Karishma and they overshadow the men completely . Story of a rich family parents , three brothers and a sister who really care for each other and hug each other a lot and thats why all the parents will take their kids to see this movie . Is it realistic ? I thought all familiy members bicker incessantly , take slights , go off in huffs, or maybe mine is just abnormal .

The elephapnt ride is very realistic , the mini camper van a great idea to take on holidays , but in the West I dont think they let you stand with your body through the skylight waving at villagers - there is a risk of decapitation .

Its a remake of HAHK -very good goody roles given to Tabu and Sonali so it doesnt give them a chance to shine , maybe just as well . Tabu is so good she will steal the show with just a ten minute appearance .

One political comment . Muslims actors and actresses like Tabu , Saif Ali Khan and Salman Khan in this movie and all the greats of past movies like Dilip Kumar and Waheeda Rehman are jewels of Indian cinema and with their good looks and clear Urdu diction have taken Bollywood to undreamt of heights and I am sure dont mind doing all the poojas as in this movie to the various Hindu Gods and Goddesses but they do risk a telling off from the more orthodox groups !

Not all movies should have a message or send one home crying . Some like this that make you feel good are therapeutic too . I quite liked the hippo alarm clock where the animal does a little hoopla . Also superb is the Rajasthani -Tak Thaiya dance with the peacocks in full bloom .There are a couple of mistakes in the movie . Doctors are too busy making money to have time to do home visits for kids with a bit of temperature . The parents should have used paracetamol first .

According to ancient traditions the girl used to take her share of the family wealth away on marriage - ie dowry - and her in laws then didnt come and stay with her parents to consume any more -but the Indian govt made dowry illegal about forty years ago and made daughters equal sharers in the wealth . Hence all the talk of giving dividing it amongst the three brothers is illegal and the Indian censors should not have permitted it ..Mo

I just saw Hum Saath Saath Hain last night. It was just an average hindhi film (to me). the first half did not give as much as a clue as what the movie was about! it (the first half) was filled with fun and music (excellent music at that!).

The movie starts about a quarter of the way into the second half. emotions start flying around. acutally this part is pretty good. Mohnish is alright in his acting. what film makers did not tell any of us viewers is that the "actual" lead was really Mohnish and not Salman or Saif who both play younger brothers.

Sonali is really glowing in the movie. she's never looked better. Tabu, Neelam and Karisma also add to make the movie among a handful to show so many pretty faces in single movie.

Don't forget the "enormous" cast!!!! This movie is about family relations. trust among members of the family. see it and make up your own mind.. Riyaz

If you had thought HAHK was a Marriage video, HumSaathSaath Hain will knock you out. In what should be called the "mother of marriage videos" this movie has Three engagements, Four marriages, One Silverjublee Marriage anniversary, endless distribution of ladoos& pedas, family jaunts, daily poojas , filling it's three+ hours of frame.

The movie is similar to previous Barajtya's movies in terms of presentation, characters, content. The only exception being, in MPK and HAHK, the central focus was on the lead pair : MaineyPyarKiya was more of a Salman-Bhagyashree love story ; Similary, HAHK ' s story centred around the bonding between Salman and Madhuri ; Whereas in HSSH , all the cast share the footage almost equally and the stage is mostly filled with a whole bunch of happy characters.

There is not much of romantic wooing or tension between the pairs here. The relation between them is set at the beginning of the movie itself. Infact, none of the three pairs have a separate song, which must be some sort of record for a multistarrer.

It's a "feel good" sort of movie. All the characters are paragons of virtue and goodness here. There are no conflict in relations. It's SoorajB's Syrupy advertisement for Jointfamily, which looks like a happy fantasy and will surely be lapped up by the Indian audiences.

The credits roll out along with the title song in the background with the three pairs prancing around. The first half hour is filled with a profusion of characters making their introduction in rapid succession. Don't be surprised if your head spins in confusion in trying to make out who is who. You will break the puzzle yourself as the film nears the interval. Any further doubts will surely be cleared by the end of the movie.

Mohnish , Salman , Saif play the three brothers with Neelam as their sister. All of them get almost equal footage, though it is Saif who gets to play the prankster and boisterous of the lot. Salman is surprisingly muzzled into a quiet and studious type of role. But, he does manage to sneak in a bare chested scene. Mohnish plays the typical "bada bhai" role. Saif looked the most impressive among the three.

Neelam , making a comeback after a long time, looks cute and chirpy. Tabu is paired opposite Mohnish and is quiet and elegant as the elder bhabhi. Sonali and Salman team up as the shy and coy pair. Though there is nothing much in her role other than blushing, Sonali does manage to impress with her pretty looks. Karishma is teamed opposite Saif and her bubbling presence gives much needed life to the film.

Songs are situation based and look good in the movie, though none of the them seem to be potential chartbusters. Photography is competent. The song in jodhpur (was it jodhpur?) palace was picturised excellently. Peacocks, elephants, smiling females , happy kids etc. Whoever handled the department (costume designer) of dressing the four female leads , did a great job. They looked graceful and dignified throughout the movie.

Overall, this makes for a relaxed, pleasant viewing. Personally, i found it good. There is absolutely no violence, except for a solitary slap. There are no negative emotions, except for a few minutes of Ramayan Melodrama. The movie is one long party filled with happy and beautiful people in fantasy land.

If you liked HAHK,, you will love this one. If you couldn't stand HAHK, you will hate HSSH.

But, i won't be surprised, if the film gets a positive and enthusiastic response, just like HAHK. I don't understand this criticism about "No story".

How many Hindi movies have a proper story?? 99% of them deal with the standard formula of "love story", "love triangle" or "Action". A quick glance at the poster itself would give us an idea about the stories of these movies ;-)

In that respect, HumSaathSaath saves the trouble by not having any story ! In its way, it's a unique type of film .No drama, No conflict. Nothing negative at all. Any routine masala director would have been tempted to add in a few villians, fights etc etc to spice up the proceedings, but SoorajB wisely stays away from the "standard" formula.

It's one big happy family party for most of the duration. But, the director succeeds to a major extent, in ensuring that the audience doesn't get bored or lose intrest .

As i said previously, not everybody is going to like the movie. If you like Action, drama, high pitched emotions, stay away... cheers rajMast

RamGopalVarma' is one of the few Mainstream Indian movie directors, who doesn't flinch from trying variety of themes. For the past decade, beginning from his Debut movie "Shiva"(which was a raging success in Telugu), Varma has made Gangsterflicks (Satya, Gayam ), AdventureCapers (KshanaKshanam) Comedy (Money) , Supernatural (Deyyam), Mystery(Kaun) etc.

Some succeded at the box office ,some didn't. Some came out well (KshanaKshanam for instance), some failed miserably (Daud) . But, it hasn't deterred Varma from making the films he believes in.

His latest " Mast" makes for Mast viewing. A breezy entertainer, the thin plot revolves around the obsession of a film fan over his favourite actress. It's supposed to have been inspired by Varma's craze about Sridevi during his younger days. He ofcourse, went on to direct Sridevi in KshanaKshanam.

Kitu, the crazy film fan and lead of Mast shows the usual traces of filmi pagalpan - splashing his favourite actress'es posters all over his room, watching her movies first day first show and further shows, day dreaming etc etc. I guess, this sort of antics would find a echo in many a regular film viewer. Many of us, must have had such fleeting phases of crushes with film stars some time or other during the college days.

Trouble starts when his marks slides and Mallika becomes his fulltime obsession. His father in a fit of rage tears of the posters in his room. An agonised Kitu runs aways from home and lands in Bombay in the fervent hope of meeting Mallika. Mallika (Urmila), has her own troubles. She has a tormentor in her evil uncle and her personal life is unhappy in contrast to the fun she exudes in her screen life.

There are other funny characters in the film - the "tapori" type of gang whom Kitu befriends in a restraunt close to Mallika's house. The Restraunt owner, who bewails the Uturn of his fortunes. And ofcourse, the most funny of them all- the AutoDriver who keeps lamenting the loss of his "RoopKiRani" (sridevi) and showers curses on Boney Kapoor for "stealing" her away from him.

Antara, playing a cameo as Kitu's girlfriend impressive, though i found her a touch dramatic in the initial scenes.

Music by SandeepChowta is fast and catchy. The tunes and voice sounds a bit different and that adds to it's appeal. For eg: Sandeep himself has sung the title song ; SonuNigam displays his amazing range in a couple of songs- RukiRuki, Aasmen Se ; He then delights in mimicking his Idol Rafi in the reworked version of "pucho na yaar kya" . SunidhiChauhan has an intresting voice.

Technical credits are top class, a standard feature of Verma's movies.

Overall, a fun movie and worth watching. The final scene involving DalipTahil(Kitu's father) mirrors the spirit of the movie.. cheers raj

Pyar Koi Khel Nahin

Had read a lot of bad reviews but it turned out to be much
better apart from the silly ending .where ..( just kidding
Rao !) .

Absolutely the best bit was the Hijra dance , transvestites
or hermaphrodites or maybe just gay men who dress in female
clothes and dance at a newborn's arrival and wont go away
unless they have been paid lot of money . Usually they show
just a small item ( Paresh Rawal in Tamana ) but here the
dance lasts a full five minutes and is great .

Story of two brothers in love with the same girl who loves
only one with them . I like the bit where the disappointed
one gets drunk and starts talking to a dog and asking him
'Have you ever fallen in love with a b..? !'

Its probably that Roy woman again who is the art director ! .
The good guys live in houses with modern furniture while the
bad ones with black traditional Indian furniture . The women
look truly awful in Western clothes in the first half and
Australia could have been better shown . The picture had too
much of the blue color in it with the actors wearing clashing blue suits and yellow ties .

I was translating for a gora friend and he was laughing his head off , some of the
dialogs are quite funny . He even wept at the end , it was
the first Bollywood movie he had ever seen but he will get
used to it ..

Badshah

I finally got to see Baadshah today. Amidst all the many charms of this laugh-out-loud comedy (the clever pastiche of sixties spy thrillers, the spectularlarly-staged and choreographed songs, the cohesion of the actors' ensemble performance), I was struck by a sense of guilt. There was Twinkle Khanna, proving herself to be a key component of the film in my view, and not just there to add glamour (which she also did, in abundance!). Twinkle acts, and dances, with style, flair, and conviction, and I owe her an apology for underestimating her skills in my Magnificent Five review.

I just hope that, in future, we see her in roles that escape the wide-eyed innocent, gullible girlfriend mould, first seen in her Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai performance. There must be more to Twinkle than that. I am sure there is. . Richard Turner .

Dil Kya Kare

This review contains minor plot spoilers; nothing that, in *MY* opinion, will detract from your enjoyment of the film, but if you are paranoid about spoiler, read no more.

Mahima Choudhary & Ajay Devgan are a happy-happy-joy-joy couple, with their delightful 7 year old daughter -- actually, the child actress

deserves special mention. While she is annoying in parts, overall the director does a good job in extracting a reasonable performance from her. (In most Hindi movies, you feel like banging your head against a wall, when you see how children are depicted.)

The only cloud on their idyllic life is the mysterious "auntie" who keeps visiting their daughter and giving her expensive gifts, when they are not around. Has she got kidnapping in mind? Her name is "Nandita Rai" and neither Ajay nor Mahima have heard of her.

Well, as is obvious to anyone who even bothered to see the credits, Kajol is "Nandita Rai", and being Kajol, her intentions are certainly well-intentioned and mean no harm to the child. And its when Ajay returns home and confronts her that the situation is set up..

There is a major plot twist about an hour into the movie -- and even though its totally far-fetched from a believability standpoint, I'm willing to accept it. Because its a basic premise that you have to buy, else the movie won't make sense. However, there are several other plot holes and well-known cliche devices.

The picture does keep you guessing about what's going to happen. Contrary to usual fine acting, its Ajay Devgan who lets this film down by providing a very ambivalent wishy-washy performance. (Thats how his character was written.) And even Kajol is quite lack-lustre. While she does impress me with her ability and willingness to go up against beautiful women and be seen as drab in comparison (first half of "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" and virtually all of this film"), she just didn't bring any passion and will into her role. And just when you think the film has resolved one way, the end leaves you guessing. And there was one decision made by Ajay at the end, which just is flat out impossible to accept -- as I said, too many plot holes.

Mahima Choudhary is simply gorgeous -- not quite the staquesque beauty of an Aishwarya Rai -- but a knock-out figure (which she displays to full advantage), and she brings a lot of passion to her role, especially her scenes in the second half as the wronged wife. She certainly steals the acting highlights in this film, despite going up against two much more acclaimed actors. Chandrachud plays Ajay's friend who has coveted Mahima for a long time, and again he is nothing special -- wavering between being loyal and opportunistic.

The songs are quite unspecial -- except for the title number, which is reasonable. My wife's opinion, and one which has a fair amount of truth, was that the film would have worked a lot better with Kajol as the wife, and Mahima Choudhary as the "other" woman.

The movie is not a total waste. Mahima Choudhary, is of course, very easy on the eyes, and actually has potential as a fine actress (I hereby reverse the opinion I formed of her after "Daag"), and.. There is one dance sequence, where Ajay first dances with Kajol on the dance floor (and while I *love* Kajol's acting ability, some one please tell that girl that she can't really dance), and then again dances with Mahima in their bedroom --- that scene is one of the most sensual and erotic I have seen in recent Hindi cinema.. Earth

Movies revolving around Partition, one of the bloodiest and eventful events in recent Indian history, have been too few. It has been given short shrift by the Bollywood movie makers , who generally can't see beyond the standard Love and action themes. In that context, DeepaMehta's "Earth/1947" makes intresting viewing. The strength of the movie lies in it's Straight, no-holds barred presentation. Much of the credit should go to BapsiSidhwa on whose book (cracked India) the script is based on.

DeepaMehta does a fairly decent job , though all the media attention on her is more due to the theme of her movies, rather than her directing prowness. To her credit, Earth doesn't lose momentum or divert into needless trivia. Short , Taut and gripping for most of it's length, it makes good viewing, both as a cinema and also as a topical Newspaper item brought to life.

There are many touching scenes - Two of them are standouts: Aamir's desperate proposal to Nandita to save him from sinking to animal depths. That was a heart rending scene. And then the final betrayal scene . The movie is worth watching for just these two scenes itself. The best part is, none of them sound phoney or creation of cinematic licenses. For instance Aamir's character could be that off anybody who has suffered personal loss or tragedy in communal conflagrations.

Aamir's IceCream wallah is a genial, flirtatious, happygolucky character , until his sisters are butchered in the partition madness; that drives him crazy, he gravely tries to keep his balance, his descent into madness is gradual and conscious and when the final denouement comes , it is chilling. Aamir, as usual is at his competent best. This is an hatrick of standout performances from him this year.

RahulKhanna's Mallishwallah is a strong and sober character . The one who extends help and shelter in proxy to old friends who are in danger, the one who manages to win his lady love. It's a fine contrast to the Icewallah. RahulK's is an impressive debut. NanditaDas sizzles as the ayah. Dark, Dusky and Delectable, she gives the best performance of the movie. She plays the Hindu nanny to naughtyLenny, the parsee girl, who is the narrator of the events. For the voueyers, there is a prolonged sexual scene between Nandita and Rahul. A western review described it as "gratutious even by western standards" ;-)

Also, the dialogues are peppered with coarse(street) language. There are a couple of scenes which give the allusion of extreme violence. ARRehman's music is haunting. It would surprise the listeners to see a differet facet of ARR.

A movie worth watching, if you prefer serious, meaningful cinema.. cheers raj

Hello Brother

Stupid movie. Salman acting like a Buffon. Arbaaz is wooden and looks good when he doesn't act,his expressions in comedy scenes are Horrible.

Rani ,she is the FATTEST actress i have ever witnessed on Silver Screen,U can't see her sans Make-up. Sohail, tried to redo PKTDK,God knows how many movies he lifted the scenes from.Very Crude comedy,he has along way to go. Don't waste money on it..pkumar

All comedy movies are disappointing the first time . Watch it again..

What I found truly astonishing is the amount of hard creative work that goes into each movie . For eg just get the DVD of 'Bade Mian chote mian' a truly excellent print and just go through the songs . Forget the lyrics, choreoraphy , music all great , just look at the costumes worn by the artistes and dancers .

I swear there must be a 1000 different costumes just for this movie each more eye catching than the other ! Imagine the cost ! The popularity of these movies is not just accidental . In Hollywood they probably pay too much to the stars and forget the props while in Bollywood they pay the stars peanuts and make them work in ten movies at a time but spend all the money on costumes and sets and that is as it should be..

Btw I didnt realize that Austin Powers plays Dr Evil and Fatso as well , another movie that must be seen twice..Mo

Over 1500 happy film-goers attended the opening of TAAL at Cinesphere in
Toronto this week-end.  This was an estimated attendance from only 3 shows.
Many were turned down since the shows were sold out.  Within 30 minutes of
opening the box-office all the 600-650 odd seats got sold out on sat and
sunday.  Due to negative publicity and bad rumors, there was only 50%
attendance on Friday first show .  Many of the movie goers were new clientele who did
not want to go to the regular theatres.  50% were repeat goers.  So, if you
are in the neighbourhood of Toronto, drive down for next week-end showing on
Fri,Sat and Sun at 8 p.m.  The sound level was an estimated 33,000 watts
powerhouse digital sound!!
